Peace

Peace is a shoreless ocean, it is the light that illuminates the world. (SV90, p. 141)

The world should strive for peace. That is the meaning of the benediction Om Shanti! Shanti! Shanti! Why is this Shanti (Peace) uttered only three times and not more times or less times? This refers to peace in three aspects. Adhi-bhautika (physical), Adhyatmic (mental) and Adhi-daivika (spiritual). Peace relating to the body, the mind and the Self are invoked by this benediction. Such profound meanings are implicit in the pronouncements of Bharat’s sages. (SSS Vol.27, 1994)

Your lives are essentially of the nature of Peace (Shanti). Your nature is essentially Love; your hearts are saturated with Truth. Rid yourselves of the impediments that prevent their manifestation, you do not make any attempt towards this and so, there is no Peace or Love or Truth in the home, the community, the nation and the world. (SSS Vol.12)

Peace comes from within. Contentment is a mental condition. Do not feed the roots of attachment to worldly comforts, more than is absolutely necessary. They lead only to anxiety and fear, they can never satisfy the innermost craving of man. Lead them into the path of devotion and dedication; that will be for them the path of content and joy. Emphasise the universal Self Principle, encourage prayer, meditation. Quiet contemplation of grandeur and glory of God, reflected in Nature, repetition of the Name of the Lord, encourage silence and solitude, for the sake of introspection and contact with the springs of joy inherent in man. (Sens.SS)

If you are at peace with yourself, you will discern peace all around. (DG, p. 261)

Peace is the characteristic of the mind of Man. That is the innate quality of the mind. In order to search for peace there is no need to go anywhere else, as gold and silver lie hidden under the earth and pearl and coral under the sea, Peace and joy also lie hidden in the activities of the Mind. Desirous of acquiring these hidden treasures, if one dives and turns mental activities inward, then, he becomes full of Prema or Love. (Prema Vahini, p. 50)

Peace is the inner wealth of every man. When you have such great wealth in you, why you should run after any wealth outside? When you have already have a lighted lamp in your house, why you should go to others’ houses to light your lamp? When you have already fire in your house, why you should go to your neighbour to borrow it? Your peace is within you; you need not go to anybody else in search of peace. When you undertake activities that purify your mind, peace will become your property. (SS Dec 12, p. 409)

When you proceed on the path of Satya, that itself will lead you to Dharma. Shanti will emerge from the union of Satya and Dharma, you will have experience of Peace. When you have love in you, then you will have no enemies. You cause harm to others only when you lack love. Therefore, you should cultivate love. In order to experience love, you must first attain the state of Peace. (SS Feb 09 , p. 34)

Sometimes, you become too much angry, you may even beat someone. But this is a great sin. In fact, you do not beat your enemy but God Himself. Therefore, you should lead your life in such a way that you do not cause harm to anybody. It is natural to do good to those who do good to you. There is nothing great about it. But it is only Sai who does good to even those who try to harm Him. I do not take their faults into consideration. I do not pay attention to those who try to harm Me in any manner. You should always remain in a state of supreme peace. You can attain everything if you have peace. (SS Feb 09 , p. 36)

Peace brings love. Where there is peace, there cannot be hatred, we do not get angry, even if someone accuses us. Normally, we do not care for any one when we are angry. Many people speak ill of Me, accuse Me and even heckle Me. But, I am not disturbed. I am always happy and blissful. That is real love. Where there is anger, hatred and jealousy, it means that there is no love. Hence, we should always follow the motto of ‘Love All, Serve All!’ (SSS Vol.42, p. 65)

Only thoughts of God and intense love for Him bring peace. As worldly thoughts diminish, thoughts of God increase. Normally, the mind is all the time desiring these worldly things. As the desires are cut one by one, the peace becomes stronger. Swami cannot give peace of mind; one has to work for it. (CWBSSB, p. 24)

The mind is a web of desires. Peace of mind comes when there are no desires, and in that state, there is no mind; the mind is destroyed, so to speak. Peace of mind really means purity, complete purity of consciousness. All spiritual practices are aimed at purification of the heart. (CWBSSB, p. 57)

Peace is what every one seeks, but it can never be secured from the outside world. Accumulation of riches and power cannot endow peace. Peace can alone come only from the fountain of peace within. (SSS Vol.8, p. 32)

Peace and prosperity cannot drop down from the sky; they have to be striven for, and acquired by sincere effort dedicated to God with intense and pure devotion; they have to be won by the cultivation of love, humility and reverence. (SSS Vol.8, p. 82)

The dawn of peace can be brought about only by learning, practising and teaching the art of living together in peace and amity in the home. Then peace in the world can be established without delay or travail. (SSS Vol.7, p. 183)

Peace is the most priceless possession of man. It is the sign of a virtuous character, willingness for service, a readiness to renounce, a clean spirit of resignation, and awareness of the evanescence of material wealth, of cool agitationless lake of Joy in the heart. (SSS Vol.7, p. 467)

Fill the reservoir with water; then, when you turn the taps, the buckets will be full. Cultivate love and devotion; then your activities will be saturated with compassion and charity; they will yield the golden harvest of joy and peace. The water must be pure; the Love must be unselfish an universal. You can yourself judge whether your Love is narrow or broad, whether your Devotion is shallow or deep. Are you content with your achievement? Examine it yourself - pronounce the verdict on yourself, by your own discrimination. Purity of motive is the best guarantee that you will have peace. An uneasy conscience is a tormenting companion. Righteous action will leave no bad effects, to disturb your sleep or health.

If there is righteousness in the heart
There will be beauty in character;
If there is beauty in character
There will be harmony in the home.
When there is harmony in the home
There will be order in the nation.
When there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.

So, be righteous; avoid all prejudices against others on the basis of caste, creed, colour, mode of worship, status, or degree of affluence. Do not look down on any one; look upon all as Divine as you really are. (SSS Vol.10, 13-1-1970)

The dawn of peace can be brought about only by learning, practising and teaching the art of living together in peace and amity in the home. The peace in the world can be established without delay or travail. (ACPMSB, p. 201)

Grieve for lost chances, lost time; move on every day, forward to the Goal (God-wards). Amidst all these absurd loves and hates, the meaningless game of having and hoarding, losing and lamenting, building and demolishing castles in the air, you have no moment of real calm. Peace of mind will not descend on you because your room is air-conditioned or your sofa is soft-cushioned. It does not depend on your bank balance; or on the diplomas you have collected. It can come only when you deny the Danava in you all chances of moving you, when you encourage the Divine in you to manifest Himself. The Danava is the prompter of the Asuric traits mentioned in the Gita. (SSS Vol.4, p. 10)

Sattvika quality: It should be noted that its main characteristic is a perennial state of peace. Other traits related to Sattva are forbearance, compassion, truth and similar virtues. The Sattvika quality gives no room for vices like lust, anger, greed and envy. The Sattvika person converts any action of anger into an act of love. If one cannot effect such a change, all his austerities are useless. (SSS Vol.29, p. 197)

If you want to become efficient at invasion, you will have to enter the war field. But if you want to achieve peace, you should not resort to violence. ‘In the absence of strife, there is peace. In peace, there is supreme peace and in supreme peace there is bliss,’ observed Gandhi. You can appreciate the greatness of light only in darkness. (M, p. 19)

Man craves for peace. Though the source of peace and bliss is within himself, he seeks them in the external like one pursuing a mirage. Owing to restless activity, endless worry and limitless desires, man has lost peace of mind and has become prey to discontent and misery. At the outset, peace has to be cultivated within ourselves. And then that peace has to be extended to the family. Peace should begin with the individual and spread to the whole society. (SSS Vol.22)

Where is peace? Peace lies in the control of the senses. If you are not able to control your senses, you cannot attain peace; you will get only pieces. If you want to be peaceful, you have to imbibe the qualities of quietude and composure. Let anybody criticise, abuse or hurt you; you should maintain your composure. When someone criticises you, do not take it to heart. Think that his tongue has produced some sound. You have nothing to do with it. If you receive the abuses hurled at you, you will be affected by them. Otherwise, you will not be disturbed. Even if somebody beats you, think that he has beaten your body and not you. In fact, none can ever harm or hurt you, because you are not the body. If you have such a firm conviction, then you will not have anger or hatred towards even those who abuse or assault you. Therefore, firm conviction is most essential for peace. (SSS Vol.39, pp.68-69)

Peace is within you. It cannot be found outside. Outside, there are only pieces. Similarly, happiness is not outside. Many people come to Swami and pray, ‘Swami, I want peace of mind.’ I tell them that they have to search for peace within themselves. I am always full of peace and bliss. What is the reason for loss of peace in man today? His desires are the basic cause of his restlessness. Where there are desires, peace disappears from there. Therefore, reduce the luggage of your desires. Then you will have less burden in life. (SSS Vol.39, p.118)
