Shanti Tulyam Tapo Nasti. There is no penance better than peace. What is penance? People believe penance is engaging oneself in contemplation of the Divine in solitude in a place away from human habitation. This is not correct. True penance consists of developing harmony in thought, word and deed and recognition of the principle of Oneness. Penance is to entertain the feeling of purity, unity and divinity. Where is the need to do penance for attaining peace, when it is within you and not to be procured from external sources? What great ignorance is this! When once you experience the peace inside, why do penance? That is why it is said; there is no penance better than peace. (S, p. 48)
