Control of the Senses

You need not feel disheartened at the prospect of being unable to control the senses. By developing one-pointed devotion to God, senses can be brought into control. (AAWW, p. 30)

He who is able to fully control his senses will be in a position to attain liberation or moksha. Vemana the well-known philosopher poet has written a verse, which says that one has eaten the dog is considered a great yogi; one who has eaten a pig is considered a greater yogi; one who has eaten an elephant is the wisest among the yogis. We must go deep into the meaning of these three statements. The word ‘dog’ stands for anger and the word ‘pig’ stands for ego, and the word ‘elephant’ stands for attachments. One who is able to control and overcome his anger, ego and attachments becomes a great yogi. (Murthy, pp. 26-27)
