Creation

Look at the marvellous variety in Creation. No one thing is the same as another; no one person resembles another. This can only be the ‘leela’ or sport of the Phenomenon with limitless glory; God. Anyone can understand that no lesser power could be the source. On the basis of the mystery that inheres Creation one can easily infer the Almighty Power that has created it. Those who are incapable of unravelling the mystery of the Created can never unravel the nature of the Creator. (Sutra Vahini, pp. 26-27)

You have had the good fortune of looking at the divine vision. You have also seen the divine significance of the lingam and that will grant you complete salvation. So far as you are concerned, you have attained complete salvation and there are no more rebirths for you. It is a piece of great good fortune for you. Some of you have seen this manifestation as a specific form, some as a light and some only as a streak or a flash of light, but it does not matter in what form you have seen the generation and manifestation of this lingam. What you have really seen is the secret of the creation. (S&M, pp. 140-141)

Creation is projection of the Divine Will. It is called Prakriti (Nature). In every object emanating from Nature the Divine principle exists and must exist. It is to proclaim this immanence of the Divine that man has evolved. (SSS Vol.21, p. 81)

You are beautiful flowers in Gods garden

You are twinkling stars in Gods sky

Love the flowers; love the stars as well,

You are the most wonderful beings in Gods creation.

With the passage of time, scientists themselves are veering round to the view that the universe is being guided and governed by some divine power. The innumerable stars and planets in the universe are whirling at tremendous speed. If they are to deviate even slightly from their orbits or their speed, it would result in an universal holocaust. Who has ordained them to adhere to their speeds and orbits? To-day’s scientists are creating artificial satellites, which are orbiting around the earth. But these satellites are crashing down or catching fire in a few days or months, where as the planets in God’s creation are orbiting regularly since time immemorial, without any crashing, or catching fire. Light travels at the rate of 1,86,000 miles per second. Even with such a tremendous speed, it takes lakhs of years for light to travel around the families or constellations of the suns and stars. In the Milky Way that is visible to us, there are innumerable stars unknown to us. The light from some of the stars has not yet reached the earth, despite the lapse of aeons since their creation. Even the scientists are in doldrums to understand fully such aspects of creation. What a contrast between the scientists who swell up with pride on account of discovering but a minute fraction of the mystery of creation, and the Creator (God) who is running the whole universe peacefully, silently, patiently and lovingly without any pomp or pride!

Not this alone. The way this creation or Nature is functioning is amazing beyond words. For instance, the carbondioxide exhaled by man is being taken up by the plants and oxygen released by the plants is being inhaled by man. Who has made this mutually beneficial arrangement in Nature? Poet-saints like Purandardas have sung the praise of the Lord Almighty in the following terms: ‘Who has watered, manured and grown the small shrubs and the gigantic trees in the crevices of the rock in the mountains? Who has painted the beautiful peacock and its tail with such attractive colours? Who has designed the wonderful combination of a green body and a red beak for a parrot? ‘The scientist may explain away all such things as the ‘Law of Nature’. But are these scientists able to transcend Nature available in Nature? Whatever the scientists claim as their ‘creation’ is only derived from a combination of the basic materials found in Nature. For example, the scientists produce water by combining hydrogen and oxygen. But then, which scientist has produced or created hydrogen and oxygen? These elements are produced by sunlight. In the same manner whatever the scientist may produce is based only on the permutation and combination of the already existing materials in Nature. The fact is conveniently ignored by most scientists. When one ponders over the mysteries or secrets of Nature, even a fool will have to admit the existence of a divine power behind all these wonderful phenomena. Let us consider another example. There are nearly 5.08 billion human beings in the world. But it is amazing that in such a huge population, no two persons look exactly alike. Which creator except God can do this extraordinarily wonderful feat! The goods manufactured by the modern ‘creators’ are all alike because they come out of the same mould. What a striking contrast! The students should therefore, try to understand the mysteries of creation. (SSS Vol.25, pp. 91-92)

Prior to creation, before activity, there was darkness; after, there was light and movement. (LD, p. 148)

Daivadhinam jagat Sarvam

Satyadhinam tu Daivatam

Tat Satyam Uttamadhinam

Uttamo Paradevata

The entire creation is under the control of God.

That God is under the control of Truth

That truth is under the control of noble ones.

The noble people are greater than gods. (Sanskrit Verse)

(SSB 2002, p. 37)

God is the creator of this world. He is the presiding deity of action (Karmadhyaksha). You cannot have a table unless there is a carpenter to make it. You cannot construct a house unless there is a builder. Likewise, for everything there is a creator. All that you see, mobile and immobile, is the creation of God. That is the reason, He is extolled as ‘Karmadhyaksha’. He presides over every activity. (SSS Vol.32 Part II, p. 18)

Purusha and Prakriti are the two eternal entities involved in creation. Purusha, the masculine entity is imperishable and permanent; Prakriti the feminine entity is perishable and impermanent. While Purusha is the eternal reality of Divinity or the Cosmic Witness, Prakriti or primal matter is given a motherly connotation. Thus Prakriti is also referred to as ‘Bhumata’ (mother earth), ‘Loka mata’ (mother of the world), ‘Jaganatha’ (Lord of creation) and ‘Vishvanatha’ (Lord of the Universe) are the various names given to the masculine entity - Purusha. (SSB 1979, p. 146)

Creation means an act: a result: what then was before that act? ‘Atma eva Idam Eka Eva Agra Asit’ - ‘Before this the Atma alone was’ The Jagat or World, is a product which was latent; later it becomes patent. In the latent stage, it was unmanifested in the Atman itself. (UV, p. 61)

‘Imitation is only human; but Creation is Divine’. (SSS Vol.8, p. 148)

Aeons ago, the Earth was enveloped in total darkness and there were neither human beings nor any living beings. There was nothing like day or night. For a long time, continuous torrential rains lashed the earth and everything was submerged in water. All the hills and mountains were washed away. Even the Himalayan Mountains that we see now razed to the ground.

Afterwards, light appeared on the earth, and sun, the moon, the stars and other heavenly bodies manifested in the sky. Gradually, mountains arose and forests appeared on the earth. Insects, birds, animals and other creatures came into existence. With the passage of time, they multiplied into millions of species.

Long ago when I was very young, I went to Anantapur. There, I stayed in the bungalow of the Collector. He said to Me, ‘Swami! There are a number of deers here. Please take some of them and keep in Your Ashram.’ I took two of them to Bengaluru. But soon they multiplied into hundreds. As there was no sufficient space for their movement, they were shifted to Prasanthi Nilayam. However, Prasanthi Nilayam building had not yet been constructed. In the same way, God’s creation multiplied manifold. Small creatures grew into bigger animals through the process of evolution and started in habiting land and water. When you sow one seed in soil, it grows into a big tree and produces numerous seeds. In the same way, many living being grew on earth and multiplied in number. The concept of division of time into days and nights and years also came into existence. The main feature of the creation is that it goes on increasing with the passage of time; it does not decrease. Hence forwards also, the same trend will continue.

The ultimate creation of God was man. In the beginning there were two human beings, one male and one female. They formed the genesis of the entire human race. Man developed his family, his progeny grew in number and human population inhabited the entire earth. With the growth of human population, many nations and religions came into existence. Today there are more than six billion human beings on earth, but they lack the quality of humanness. What is the use if human beings are bereft of human quality? Therefore, what is needed today is humanness.

The colour of the sky appears to be blue. The oceans also appear to be blue. But actually, the water of the oceans is not blue. It is only due to the vastness of the oceans that it appears so.

Similar is the case with sky; it appears blue because of its vas distance. Since God is all-pervasive and has no limit, He is portrayed as blue-complexioned. The mystery of God’s creation is wonderful and unfathomable. Nobody can describe this mystery in words. (SS Nov 09, pp. 325-326)

Where there is smoke there must be fire,

When there is a driver to run the train,

And person to control the traffic signals,

Should there be not the Creator behind this world? (Telugu poem)
