Universal Atma

‘You become Bhagavan as soon as you express the Atma principle. Each one of you can become Bhagavan by merging your separate individual Jiva, or self, in the ocean of the universal Atma.’ (SSSm Vol.3, p. 308)

The Lord had Maya as His Consort, so to say, and He had a son, called Manas. This Manas, to continue the parable, had two wives: Pravritti and Nivritti, (Attachment and Detachment). Of course, Pravritti was his favourite wife, and she had a hundred children. Nivritti was ill treated and neglected and she had just five. That is the symbolism of the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Though the children all lived in the same kingdom, ate the same food and learnt from the same teacher, their natures differed widely from one another; the Kauravas, children of attachment were greedy, cruel self-centred and vain; the Pandavas, the five of them, represented each one a supreme virtue, so that they could be said to symbolise Satya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and Ahimsa. Since they were so pure and born of Detachment, the Lord became their Guide. In fact the Lord will be the Guide of whoever instals Him as Sarathi. He will not consider that position inferior. He is the Sanathana Sarathi, come to be the Sarathi of all. He is the Lord, for all who seek a Master, a Support. The Atma is the Master in every one and Krishna is the Universal Atma, personified. (SSS Vol.3)

We have friends and foes, likes and dislikes; whereas Vedanta teaches us to develop equal-mindedness. Just as we do not punish our teeth for accidentally biting our tongue because we consider both the organs as parts of our body, so also, we have to bear in mind that the eternal and universal Atma resides in everyone and everywhere. We should not accentuate differences, but concentrate upon unity. If we attach importance to the bodily relationship, then the individual variation will come to the fore. On the other hand, we should remember that a teacher, a friend, an actor, a guru, and a disciple are different from each other only in name and form. The Atma which is the witnessing consciousness in all of them is the same. The presence of Atma in all these names and forms establishes the oneness of all of them. (SSB 1973, p. 184)
