Jiva

Individual soul with ego. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

The jiva resides in the world. God resides in the heart. (SSB 1972, p. 72)

The jiva that lives in the body is indestructible and if studied carefully, we come to the conclusion that one who resides in the body has no birth and no death and has neither attachment nor detachment. (SSB 1974, p. 73)

Jiva’ means that which assumes prana; the jiva holds on to the prana, through his skill and intelligence. He is the Antaryami, who has penetrated into everything and who sustains everything. So the Para prakriti is just Paramatma itself. All that becomes manifest with same Chaitanya has to be taken as One. (GV, p. 102)

The jiva who is eternal and immortal is born again and again, as a transitory mortal; he continues to accumulate activity, promoted by inherited impulses and activity produces consequences, which he must shoulder and suffer. It is the body that decays and dies, not the jiva or the individualised soul. The jiva befogged by Ajnana, is unable to recognise his Reality. Discrimination will reveal the truth. (UV, p. 55)

The bird Jiva, is in the nine-holed pot. It is a wonder, how the bird, has a body; how it came into the pot, and how it rises up and goes. The Suras, the Munis, and Naras of the Nine Khandas and the Nine Dwipas are all undergoing the sentence of carrying about with them the burden of the body. Now of these, who are the friends and who, the enemies? When egoism dies out, all are friends; there are then no enemies. This lesson has to be remembered by all (Prema Vahini, p. 46)

The Jiva has come to this earth in order to reveal the splendour of the spark of Godhead, which it is. The body is the wick of the lamp, yearning for God is the ghee, which feeds the flame. But like the rat which, attracted by the strong smelling cheap stuff inside the trap, neglects all other articles of food in the granary and falls a prey to its foolishness, man too neglects his real sustenance and wastes his life in pursuit of mortal riches (SSS Vol.1, p. 125)
