Jnana Deepa

(Specific pre-requisites for the lighting of the Lamp of Wisdom)

  • Pramida or oil container in the form of viveka or discrimination between the real and the unreal etc.
  • Oil consisting of prema bhakti and mumukshutva, selfless loving devotion and yearning for liberation.
  • Wick made of Shatsampatti, the six virtues of sama (mind control of inner equipment, antahkarana), dama (control of the out going senses), uparati (supra-sensual delight), titiksha (forbearance or fortitude). Shraddha (faith or steadfatness) and samadhana (equanimity).
  • Pure air containg oxygen in the form of meditation on god, (bhagavad dhyana) coupled with vairagya (dispassion or detachment).
  • The shelter (goodu or windscreen) in the form of a heart free from the wing of worldly thoughts.
  • Chimney in the form of a mind free fromraga-Dvesha, likes and dislikes.

 

If the above six items are offered to god, then only he will show his compassion by destroying the darkness in the devotee with the luminous lamp-of-wisdom (jnana deepa). (NNSG Vol.6, p. 32)
