Give Up

To all of you I say, ‘Let mountains fall; let the sea overwhelm the land; but, do not give up your sadhana. And, remember, sadhana is a waste, unless you grow at the. same time in virtue and uprightness.’ If you give up all and surrender to the Lord, He will guard you and guide you. When you complain, ‘Oh! He has not guarded me,’ I reply, ‘You have not surrendered.’ The Lord has come just for this very task. He is declaring that He will do so, that is the very task that has brought Him! (SSS Vol.42, p. 78)

Man must give up the craving for material comfort and the attachment to sense-objects. He must discard the false fears, the absurd desires, the sorrows, the worries and the artificial pleasures, that now fill his mind. He must discriminate and train himself to realise that everything is as illusory as the ghost in the well! Everyone needs this self-education. The pathetic condition of every man is due to its absence. Dhyana is the remedy for this state of mind. (DhyV, p. 16)

You must endeavour to please the Guru and win his favour by obeying his orders and serving him lovingly. You should have no other thought than his welfare and happiness. Give up all else and win his Grace; then Jnana is yours. (GV, p. 89)

Give up the idea that you are the doer and that you are the beneficiary. You can do this by dedicating both deed and fruit to the Lord. Then no sin can affect you, for you are not the doer and the deed must perforce be holy. Like the oil on tongue, the collyrium on the eye, the lotus leaf on water, the deed is with you, but not for you.

Know the Brahman, take up all the tasks but renounce the consequences; giving up the fruit of activity is far superior to the giving up of activity itself. Karma yoga is far superior to karma-sannyasa. (GV, p. 98)

Superior to both these is dhyana yoga. Dhyana yoga needs the support of karma yoga. Those who renounce the fruits while activity engaged karma are very dear to Me; they are the true Sannyasins; the real renouncers. (GV, p. 98)

It is obvious that man has to give up his pursuit of sensory objects if he seeks lasting peace and joy. Material wealth brings along with it, not only joy but grief, as well. Accumulation of riches, multiplication of wants - these lead only to alternation between joy and grief. Attachment is the root of both joy and grief; detachment is the saviour. (SSS Vol.4, p. 201)

Give the Guru your mind, as you would entrust gold to the goldsmith. The Guru may need to melt, mould or beat your mind, but do not worry, as He will return to you a precious jewel. Do not say Swami give me peace, but don’t give me pain, as Swami may need to inflict pain before the process of purification is completed. (DM, p. 159)

‘I give you what you want, until you want what I have come to give’ (SV90, p. 3)

Unless you give up, you cannot acquire – that is the rule of life. Even trivial things cannot be won without parting with something. One has to pay to secure the most precious of all gifts; the gift of the Awareness of the Atma! To earn this, one has to give up sensual pleasures, but is this too big a price? In fact, what is renounced is not pleasure at all. It is fraught with pain too. Can you not give up grief to earn joy, evil to earn good, diversity to earn unity, many to earn one? One must strive for victory in the struggle against the whims and wiles of the senses. One must focus all one’s physical and mental resources to earn success; one must fill oneself with Divine Grace by offering his strength and skill to Divine Grace by offering his strength and skill to Divine Purposes. (SSS Vol.11, p. 162)

The undesirable qualities, which the true sevak should give up are; attachment, possessiveness and bossism. Their absence is the hall-mark of sevak. The gains accruing from service are beyond measure. First of all, it brings about purity of the heart. It strengthens the mind. It annihilates self-interest. It ennobles one’s outlook, it demonstrates that the sense of community and togetherness is the essence of humanness. It is only when one enjoys such a divine experience can one know the potentialities of the human adventure. Only thus can service to man become service to God. (Sens.SS, p. 57)

From today give up selfishness (svartha), turn your mind towards the Supreme (parartha), lead a life of Truth (yadartha) and sanctify your lives. Place your faith in God and do your duty to the best of your ability. Saturate yourselves with love and share it with all, if you earn the love of God even to the slightest extent, you will experience infinite joy. (SSS Vol.21, p. 102)

Give up your ego and have full faith in God. Love mother and father. This is the proper path for devotion. God exists in a special way in the parents and this truth must be recognised. (FDD, pp. G-3)

The hand that gives is always above the hand that receives. The cloud that gives the water is up above, while the ocean that receives the water down below. (NNSG Vol.5, p. 58)

Give something divine, if you want the Divine; Prema, Shanti, Dharma and Satya are Divine. Do not try to give it a flower that fades, a fruit that rots, a leaf that dries, water that evaporates. (SSS Vol.5, p. 72)

Giving is gaining; gaining is grieving. (Uniq, p. 152)

Give up this vice of envy; be happy when another is happy. That is more pleasing to the Lord than all the mantras you recite, or all the flowers you heap on His picture or image or even the hours you spend in Japam or Dhyanam. (Uniq, p. 68)

As long as you are attached to the things of the world, whatever worship you may do, you will not have God-realisation. It is not necessary to give up everything; it is enough if you enjoy everything as a gift from God and offer everything to God. Everything is a manifestation of God. You can enjoy anything with that awareness. (SSS Vol.23, p. 43)
