The proper plan of study is reading, reflection and regular application in life. Study is WORK. Inquiry into the value and applicability of what is studied is WORSHIP; the experience of the validity and value of the practice is WISDOM. (SSS Vol.9. p. 51)

The study of the scriptures and other texts can reinforce the spiritual urges already in man and induce him to practise the precepts. Do not treat the learning you derive from them as so much fodder for the brain. It must be sublimated into ananda for the individual. Envy, pompousness, egoism such evil traits have to be driven out of the individual. (BPV, pp. 96-97)

Bhagavan Baba wrote to the question, who is the real student?,  ‘The teacher’. ‘I shall be the ideal student whom my pupils can emulate’ - this must be the motto inspiring the teacher’. (SSSm, Vol.5, p.123)

Do not use the study of Shastras and Scriptures for increasing your egoism; let it make you humble, though at the same time, more resistant to temptation. Your nature is divine; what has happened is that delusion has covered it with dirt. The washerman does not make your clothes white; it is white already; what he does is to manifest its whiteness by removing the dirt that had hidden the genuine native colour white. (SSS Vol.22, p.54)
