Shravanam (listening)

Listening to discourses on the scriptures. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

Shravana, or listening, can be compared with cooking that is done in a kitchen. If we bring what is cooked to the dining room and eat it that can be compared to Manana or contemplation. After eating, if we try to digest what we have eaten, that can be compared to Nididhyasa. Only when all these three actions are done, will what we eat give strength and nourishment to our body. (SSB 1972, p. 162)

Shravan is the very first stage of spiritual progress, so, it is a good day for inaugurating spiritual study and practice. Shravanam leads ultimately to Atmanivedana, surrender of the individual to the Universal. (SSS Vol.8, p. 49)
