Savikalpa Samadhi

Subject-object type of superconscious state. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

It is enough joy to act as a handicap. The joy is as great as that of a person who has just deposited a huge load he has been long carrying, or as that of a greedy person who has just killed a serpent guarding a vast treasure he wanted to grab. The killing of the serpent is Savikalpa Samadhi; the acquisition of the treasure is the Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the highest stage.

(JV, p. 5)

Persistent performance of Dhyanam will result in the emergence of a particular Rupam or Form. Contemplating on that Form, looking at it and seeing it for days and days, finally a stage will be reached when the Form will disappear and you will forget yourself. That is the samadhi stage. In this stage, if one feeling or ideation alone persists, it is called Savikalpa Samadhi, and if no feeling or thought persists it becomes what Patanjali in the text on Raja Yoga (Rajayoga Shastra) designates as Bhava Nasana, the end of ideation.

Uncontrolled senses cause great harm. Persons in their grip cannot engage themselves in Dhyanam, even for a single second. ‘Those who aspire to have mastery over the senses must have full faith in Me’, said Lord Krishna. (DhyV, p. 65)
