Pashu

Animal, bull. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

Krishna explained the origin of the word ‘Pashu’ and that whoever has external vision should only be treated as an animal, while whoever has his vision directed inward is a true human being.

Whether it is an animal or human being in form, if he has only external vision then it is as good as being an animal. Many people are like crows. They only understand what is seen externally. They do not want to know what internal vision is. They are always wanting to enjoy worldly comforts, but very few make an effort to obtain inner peace and thus lead a blissful life. (SSB 1978, p. 124)

Pashyati iti pashuh. Pashu (animal) is named so, since it (pashyati) looks outward. Looking outward is the characteristic of animals, not of man. The important organs of sense perception in the human body - the eye, the nose, the tongue etc., are all opening outwards, in order to contact external object; so one has to conclude that the physical urge, the body’s vision (the deha drishti) is all external. (Sutra Vahini, p. 52)
