Animals

Education confers beauty on man;

It is his secret treasure;

It confers pleasure, fame and happiness;

It is the teacher of teachers;

It is one’s kinsman when abroad;

It confers supreme vision;

In a royal assembly it is learning alone, Not wealth, that counts;

A man without learning is an animal. (SSS Vol.26, p. 383)

Animals did not come for the purpose of supplying food for human beings. They came to work out their own lives in the world. When a human being is dead, the foxes and other animals may eat, but we have not come to provide food for those that eat the dead body; we have not come for that purpose. Similarly, man eats the animal, but the animal has not come to provide man with food, But we have taken to eating meat as a habit.’ (EL, pp. 75-76)

Animals with many legs have to creep along the ground; man has only two legs and so he can freely move about. The larger number of legs the greater the bondage, the tighter the restriction. Now, suppose he marries. The he has four legs, he has become a quadruped; later, when he gets sons, daughters, sons-in-law and grand-children, he is transformed into a regular centipede, capable of moving only by crawling along the ground! He cannot stand erect; he loses the freedom of movement; he has to creep slowly along the mire of material objects; he has no time or inclination to secure the Lord’s Grace. (DhyV, pp. 32-33)
