The mind is the one that creates diversity, whereas Buddhi (intellect) brings about unity. When we take 2½ meters of cloth to the tailor for stitching a shirt, he cuts it into different pieces with scissors and then uses a needle to stitch the pieces into a shirt. The mind is like the scissors that creates diversity, whereas Buddhi (intellect) is the needle used to bring about unity. The word tailor can be split into ‘tie’ and ‘lawyer’ meaning bringing together as a whole and law or Dharma respectively. (Bhagavan used ‘lawyer’ in the place of the second syllable of the word tailor, i.e. ‘lor’, in order to drive home the message in a figurative manner.) (M, p. 233)
