Fault

There are five fingers to the palm. We point out, when we come across a bad man, with the pointing finger. When you point at others, only one finger points out at them and three fingers point back at you. So when you point one fault in others, you must be able to examine three times whether there is a fault in you. There is a device for this. When you come across a big fault in others, you just consider it to be a very trivial one or a very unimportant one. Then you will not be unhappy.

Suppose there is a small fault in you, then you try to magnify it and you feel you should never let in a similar fault again. By looking at it in that way, you will not have occasion to be guilty of the same fault again. On the other hand, if you conceal your fault and try to point out the fault of others, it will not be safe either for you or for others. Do not always go forward in pointing out the faults of others. On the other hand, if any one points out at any fault in you, you must prostrate before him because you, by yourself, will not be able to find out where you are in the wrong. Because your eyes are directed outward, you will be able to find the fault in others only but you will not be able to find the fault in your own nature. (SSB 1972, p. 230)

It is only because one has faults within him that he sees the world as faulty. When there is no knowledge of fault in oneself no fault can be found even by search, for, should they not know which are the faults. Now, a question may arise whether the Lord Himself has faults, because he too searches for faults. But how can it be said that Lord is searching for faults? He searches for goodness only, not for faults and sins. These are based on the standard of the Gunas of each. The Lord will not examine the wealth, the family, the Gotra, the status; or the sex. He sees only the Righteousness, the Sadbhava. Those endowed with such Sadbhava, He considers as deserving His Grace, whoever they are, wherever they are. Therefore, develop Sadbhava. Goodness and Righteousness live and act in Joy and Love. These two are sufficient. Salvation can be attained without fail. (Prema Vahini, p. 49)
