Dheera

Steadfast, courageous, wise person. (Glossary for the Vahinis)

The hero is the steady person who is not agitated to the slightest extent by ups and downs caused by roaring waves on the sea of life; who does not lose the poise which has become part of his nature; who keeps to his schedule of spiritual discipline whatever the attraction or distraction, the wise man is he, who is unaffected by the ever present dualism of the objective world. He is the person referred to as ‘Dheera’.

Today, man aspires for positions of authority though he does not deserve them. But, Rama relinquished the position even though He deserved it. Rama was courageous in the face of adversities. He never gave any scope for weakness. He led the life of a Dheera (courageous one), not a Deena (weak-minded). Hanuman,by contemplating on Rama incessantly, became a dheera. He displayed this quality of courageousness in the court of Ravana. But the same Hanuman stood like a deena (humble one)in Rama’s presence. This drives home the point that oneshould be a deena (humble one) in front of divinity and dheera(courageous one) in the face of evil. (SSS Vol.32 Part I, pp. 105-106)

The term Dheera should not be understoodas meaning one who is a great intellectual or highly intelligent person. Dheera is the appellationgiven by the Veda to a man who turns his Dhi(intelligence) towards God.(SSS Vol.24, p. 1)

A person who never swerves from his determination even under tryingcircumstances, is called a Dheera (a hero) and such a person wins the grace of the Lord.(SSS Vol.24, p. 7)

Krishna says,

dehino smin yatha dehe

kaumaram yauvanam jara

tatha dehantara-praptir

dheeras tatra na muhyati

(Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2Verse 13)

Dheera (wise man) is not deluded by this. The hero is thesteady person who is not agitated to the slightest extent byups and downs caused by roaring waves on the sea of life;who does not lose the poise which has become part of hisnature; who keeps to his schedule of spiritual discipline, whatever the attraction or distraction. The wise man is he,who is unaffected by the ever-present dualism of theobjective world. He is the person referred to as ‘Dheera’(wise man).(GV, p. 37)
